A V4 engine, a four-cylinder piston motor in which the cylinders share one crankshaft and are placed in a V arrangement.

Two crankpins are common to V4 engines. They are usually shared by opposing pistons. Three main bearings support the crankshaft.
A V4 engine is shorter than the inline-four layout. A V4 engine is much shorter than the inline-four layout.
V4 engines have some disadvantages. They are more complex than inline-4 engines and require two exhaust manifolds and two-cylinder heads.
It can be difficult to incorporate auxiliary drives, inlet, and exhaust systems into V4 engines. They are also larger than inline-four engines. A 60deg V4 engine is smaller than a 90deg one. However, the 60deg design has a less perfect primary balance (if they are not split). To reduce vibrations, a balance shaft is often required. Any four-stroke V4 engine will fire unsteadily and may require a heavier flywheel.
V4 engines were first used in automobiles by Grand Prix racing cars (later called Formula One). The 1898 Mors rear-engined car in France was one of the first to use V4 engines.

The Lancia HTML4 engine was the first V4 engine to be used in production cars. It used aluminum as the head and block, which was quite unusual at the time.
It was built on the 1960-1994 Zaporozhets design of the LuAZ-967 military vehicle. It was air-cooled with a magnesium block and produced displacements of 0.7 to1.2 L (43-73 cubic in).
In the 1960s Ford’s European divisions began producing two different V4 engines. First was the Ford Taunus HTML4 engine. It was produced in Germany between 1962 and 1981. The Taunus V4 engine was 60 degrees with overhead valves and water cooling. It was originally designed to be used in front-engined cars. However, it was also used in other Ford models. It was also used as a mid-engine Matra 530 sports car.
The Porsche 919 hybrid LMP1 race car used a 2.0L (122 cups) turbocharged V4 engine. It was mid-mounted.
Use of a motorcycle
1931-1935 Matchless Silver Hawk was one of the first motorcycles to be powered by a V4 motor.

V4 engines were popular in the 1980s, particularly in transverse-engined Honda motorcycles with a 90-degree V4 motor with water cooling.

Use of boats
The V4 engine can also be used in outboard engines for boats. Because of its short engine length, the V4 configuration is very popular in outboard marine applications.
Johnson and Evinrude launched 70.7 cuin (1,159cc) V4 outboards in 1958. They were rated at 50 horsepower (37 kW) and weighed 200 lb (91 kilograms).
From 1935 to 2019, the Wisconsin Motor Manufacturing Company started producing V4 petrol engines for agricultural and industrial applications.
Turner Manufacturing, a British manufacturer of diesel water-cooled V4 engines for marine and industrial use, produced it in the middle of the 1940s. This engine was used in 1949-1957 Turner Yeomans of England tractor.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries designed the 4ZF, an air-cooled diesel-powered 4-cylinder engine that is used in the Type 73 Armored Personnel Carrier as well as other Japanese military vehicles.
